Inspiration and production for ‘Sails and Seabirds’

The Solent estuary in Southampton is a nature conservation habitat where many species of seabirds congregate. The sheltered natural harbours are also renowned internationally as an ideal location where sailing ships can unfurl their sails. We have taken these key elements as inspiration and depicted gulls soaring around an abstract representation of wind-blown sailing ships, representing the freedom given by the gift of life.

Pictured here is David Shackleton at Imagecoltd. Their attention to detail throughout the production was second to none! There were so many components to this artwork - the ‘wallpaper’ of abstract sails, every letter as individual characters, and over one hundred seabirds each with their own distinct sky patterns. Every section was packaged with guiding notes to make installation as uncomplicated as possible.
