Spiralling DNA Helix
Multi-faceted Research and Innovation artwork for Medway Maritime Hospital
The DNA Helix was chosen as the main symbol for this art installation as it is the emblem of clinical science. It is the molecule that is essential for life and carries the genetic instructions responsible for the development, function, growth and reproduction of all known organisms, including humans and viruses.
This artwork was unveiled on 20 May 2021, International Clinical Trials Day, to celebrate and promote the importance of Clinical Research and Innovation at Medway Maritime Hospital. It is installed in the hospitals’ main atrium and sits opposite the organ donation artwork we created for the hospital a few years ago.
The complete artwork is composed of several components. The 2.5m tall revolving DNA sculpture grabs everyone’s attention as they enter the main doorway and walk along the corridor to the atrium. There are pillars either side of this sculpture that feature over twenty illustrated icons listing all the different ways that the hospital is working with their patients to develop and trail new clinical procedures, treatment and medicines. The atrium is full of relaxed seating for people to meet and greet and have a cup of tea/coffee. Also the seating is changed to allow for meetings and conferences. When inside this area the entire artwork is revealed, including the main title artwork, with wording formed in the shape of a DNA strand.
