Catering Services at Leeds Hospitals

located in the Clarendon Wing, Leeds General Infirmary, West Yorks, England

Project Scope

Having won awards for their catering services we were commissioned to create two similar murals. The mural shown above is located in Leeds General Infirmary. The second mural is at Chapel Allerton Hospital. Both displays are approximately 16ft wide x 4ft high and feature their illuminated stained glass awards, top centre.

Overview

The two murals detail the excellent catering standards of both the Leeds General Infirmary and Chapel Allerton Hospitals. These murals are different from most of the hospital heritage murals where historical imagery largely conveys the story. Here we started with an extensive photo shoot.

We needed to illustrate three features - the stages of food production, (variety of dishes, food hygiene, nutrition and special diets); the catering staff in preparation and delivery of meals; and to show the way staff work in a caring way with patients.

We decided to utilise plates along the centre of the mural to carry the text showing the stages of food preparation. Along the top we overlaid the hand written comments taken from customer satisfaction surveys by patients staying at the hospitals onto the plates. This formed the basis of our design structure for the murals.

Client Comment

“In 1995 and 1997 the Patient Catering Services at the Leeds General Infirmary and Chapel Allerton Hospitals won excellence Awards in recognition of innovation and service for our Delivered Meals Systems. We were really proud to have won two National competitions and wanted to take the opportunity to display our Awards (Stained Glass Plaques) and that we were also accredited to the Quality Standard ISO 9002. The Trust has looked at many ways of improving the environment of the Hospitals by the use of art, and we felt a permanent pictorial mural on both hospital sites that included our Awards would also offer us the opportunity to promote the scope of our service. In the centre of the murals are our Awards and on each side are separate panels explaining about these.

Woodgate Design have worked on several projects with the Trust, and so we knew that together we would be able to develop something innovative and interesting to tell the story of Patient Catering. The finished effects provide an eye catching and entertaining portrayal of our service, which after all is an essential support for patients whilst in hospital.”
